No vacation in Qingdao

Qingdao, China, 29 May 2002. Qingdao, situated at the beautiful coast one hour’s flight from Beijing, is one of the new China’s vacation centres but there will be no vacation for the best Chinese players – China Open is presenting a field stronger than ever, especially in men’s singles.
The two Chinese WANG Liqin and MA Lin are top seeded but they will have to face players like the European Champion Timo BOLL, the Swedish legend Jan-Ove WALDNER, the fast attacking CHIANG Peng-Lung (TPE) and KIM Taek Soo (KOR) – as well as their Chinese compatriots KONG Linghui, LIU Guozheng and LIU Guoliang. 7 out the 10 best players in the World are in Qingdao. Also when you look further down the ranking you find players who can claim to have a chance. The winner of the latest Pro Tour event, the Italian Open, Peter KARLSSON (SWE), the finalist in this years Qatar Open, CHUAN Chi-Yuan (TPE) and the young Chinese winner of the Egypt Open, WANG Hao. China Open starts with qualification on Thursday and finals will be played on Sunday.
Lin Ling back to China
Qingdao, China, 29 May 2002. LIN Ling, nr. 8 on the Women’s world Ranking recently made a big step when she officially changed from representing China to Hong Kong – now she is back in China for the weekend, trying to challenge the best Chinese.
LIN Ling is going to Qingdao with a fresh and new title in her back since she won the women’s singles at the Italian Open – in Qingdao World’s nr. 1 WANG Nan and the young talented NIU Jianfeng will be waiting to stop her.
The two Singapore players LI Jia Wei and Jing Jun Hong both did well at the Italian Open and they will try once more in Qingdao – together with the best North Korean players led by World’s nr. 14 KIM Hyon Hui, who already has a Pro Tour title (Qatar Open 2001).
Looking at the top of the list for women’s singles you almost only see Asians. There is the Austrian LIU Jia, seeded nr. 9, and then you have to go down to nr. 33 before you find the Swede Sandra JOHANSSON.
