Play Into the Middle

Most people know that an extremely wide shot to the forehand or backhand is very difficult to return well, but a lot of people ignore how difficult it is to return a fast ball into the middle of the body or the elbow. Wide shots are appealing to most players because it is obvious that the opponent will have to rush to meet the ball, but when you play into someone's elbow they still have to move; they are just moving away from the ball instead of to it. Playing into the middle of the body can be especially helpful when playing against somebody with weaker footwork. When hitting out wide, it is very easy to go too far and miss the table completely. On the other hand, when playing to the middle of the table, you limit the risks of going too wide off the table, while still making your opponent move.
