Timo Boll and Liu Jia Crowned Erke German Open Champions
The host nation’s Timo Boll and Austria’s Liu Jia won the Men’s and Women’s Singles respectively at the Erke German Open in Berlin on Sunday 23rd November 2008.
Seeded no.1, Boll overcame third seed, Chinese Taipei’s Chuan Chih-Yuan in the final having earlier posted a semi-final victory over Hong Kong’s Cheung Yuk.
It was the German’s second consecutive Men’s Singles crown on the ITTF Pro Tour; three weeks earlier he had won at the Erke Austrian Open in Wels.
At the semi-final stage, Chuan Chih-Yuan had beaten Jiang Tianyi, also from Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Singles event, Germany had to settle for the silver medal.
Wu Jiaduo was beaten in five games by Austria’s Liu Jia, the 2005 European champion.
It was a second career ITTF Pro Tour Women’s Singles title for Liu Jia, she won in Brazil in 2004; whilst for Wu Jiaduo it was her first appearance in an ITTF Pro Tour Women’s Singles final.
In the semi-finals Liu Jia defeated Hungary’s Krisztina Toth whilst Wu Jiaduo overcame Italy’s Nikoleta Stefanova.
