Polish Open: Boll completes hat-trick
Monday, December 1, 2008
Germany’s Timo Boll, the no.1 seed won the Men’s Singles title at the Polish Open in Warsaw on Sunday 30th November 2008 and in so doing completed a hat-trick of consecutive wins on the ITTF Pro Tour.
Previously he had won in Austria and on home soil in Germany.
At the final hurdle he overcame Denmark’s Michael Maze, the no.5 seed; a player against whom Boll has the ideal record in world ranking events; they had met on 16 previous occasions and the German had won all 16 contests.
Including one win in the Grand Finals it was Boll’s fifteenth ITTF Pro Tour Men’s Singles title, whilst in the counterpart Women’s event for the victor it was her first.
Singapore’s Feng Tianwei, seeded no1, clinched gold recording a close semi-final win over Romania’s Daniela Dodean and a more convincing final victory against compatriot Wang Yue Gu, the no.2 seed.
Gold for Feng Tianwei in the Women’s Singles but in the Women’s Doubles she had to settle for silver; in a contest between the top two seeded pairings, the no.1 seeds prevailed, with Romania’s Daniela Dodean and Elizabeta Samara defeating Feng Tianwei and Yu Meng Yu.
Titles for the visitors and there was one title for the host nation.
Lucjan Blaszczyk and Wang Zeng Yi beat Singaporean top seeds, Gao Ning and Yang Zi to clinch the number one prize. It was the second time that the Polish pair had won on the ITTF Pro Tour; the one previous success, they won in 2006 at the Polish Open.
