Singapore’s 18 year old Ma Liang and 19 year old Yu Meng Yu won the Men’s and Women’s Singles events respectively at the Indian Open in Indore on Sunday 15th March 2009; in so doing they secured their first ever career titles at senior level on the ITTF Pro Tour.
Furthermore, they became two of the youngest players ever to capture the top prize at an ITTF Pro Tour tournament.
In an event where all four Men’s Singles semi-finalists were from Singapore, Ma Liang, seeded no.4, beat Yang Zi, seeded no.2; whilst in the counterpart duel, Cai Xiao Li, seeded no.5, accounted for Gao Ning, seeded no.1.
Both contests went the full seven games distance.
Similarly, in the final, it was a seven games duel that determined the winner with youth overcoming experience, Cai Xiao Li being 11 years the older than Ma Liang.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Singles event Yu Meng Yu staved off the challenge of Malaysia overcoming Ng Sock Khim in the semi-finals and Beh Lee Wei in the final; the latter having beaten the host nation’s Madurhika Patkar at the penultimate stage.
