Double Gold for Timo Boll at German Open

ITTF Press Release
Playing on home soil, Timo Boll won the Men’s Singles crown at the German Open in Bremen on Sunday 22nd March 2009 and, less than two hours later, added a second title by partnering compatriot Christian Süss to Men’s Doubles success.
Seeded no.1, Timo Boll, secured his seventeen career ITTF Pro Tour Men’s Singles title by overcoming Japan’s Jun Mizutani, seeded no.12, in the semi-finals and Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus, seeded no.2, in the final. At the penultimate stage Samsonov had accounted for Christian Süss to prevent the possibility of an all German final.
Disappointment for Süss but it was short-lived; in partnership with Boll the duo brought the 2009 German Open to a conclusion, defeating Japan’s Seiya Kishikawa and Jun Mizutani in the final.
It was the fifth career ITTF Pro Tour Men’s Doubles title for the partnership of Timo Boll and Christian Süss.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Singles event it was gold for Japan’s Sayaka Hirano, the no.9 seed. She accounted for China’s Li Xiaodan, seeded no.30, in the semi-finals and the Belarus defender, Viktoria Pavlovich in the final.
In the semi-finals, Pavlovich, seeded no.11, had caused a minor upset by ousting Singapore’s Sun Bei Bei, seeded no.8.
A disappointment for Li Xiaodan but there was consolation. Partnering Chinese national team colleague, Mu Zi, the duo beat the host nation’s Elke Schall and Wu Jiaduo to capture the Women’s Doubles title.
