Sunday, June 14, 2009
ITTF Press Release
The host nation and Korea shared the spoils on the concluding day of action, Sunday 14th June 2009, at the Japan Open in Wakayama.
Korea’s Oh Sang Eun and Park Mi Young won the respective Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles titles, with both doubles crowns going to Japan.
Seiya Kishikawa and Jun Mizutani clinched Men’s Doubles gold, whilst in the counterpart female event, Sayaka Hirano and Reiko Hiura secured the top prize.
Seeded no.3, Oh Sang Eun overwhelmed the host country’s Kaii Yoshida in straight games at the semi-final stage of the Men’s Singles event before beating qualifier, Germany’s Patrick Baum in the final. No player, who has been required to compete in the qualification stage of a Men’s Singles event on the ITTF Pro Tour, has ever progressed to win the title.
Patrick Baum, who caused an upset by beating Austria’s Werner Schlager, the no.4 seed in the semi-finals, came the closest yet; he extended the Korean the full seven games distance in the final.
Success for the attacking skills of Oh Sang Eun, the no.3 seed in the Men’s Singles event and it was success for the defensive skills of Park Mi Young, the no.1, seed, in the Women’s Singles competition.
The stylish Korean backspin artiste showed no charity to her hosts beating Japanese opposition at both semi-final and final stages.
In the semi-finals she defeated Yuka Ishigaki, seeded no.13, before accounting for Sayaka Hirano, seeded no.2, in the final; at the penultimate stage, Sayaka Hirano had defeated Singapore’s Sun Bei Bei, the no.3 seed.
Two titles for Korea and earlier in the day there were two titles for Japan.
Sayaka Hirano partnered Reiko Hiura to Women’s Doubles gold; seeded no.5, the pair overcame Korea’s Kim Jung Hyun and Seok Ha Jung, the no.7 seeds, in the final.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s Doubles final, victory went to Seiya Kishikawa and Jun Mizutani, the no.1 seeds; at the final hurdle they beat Korea’s Oh Sang Eun and Yoon Jae Young, the no.4 seeds, in a close seven games encounter.
It was the second consecutive Men’s Doubles title on the ITTF Pro Tour for Seiya Kishikawa and Jun Mizutani; one week earlier they had been crowned champions at the Harmony China Open.
