Indian Open: Milestone for German Star
Sunday, June 20, 2010
A vital member of the German outfit that secured the silver medal at the LIEBHERR World Team Championships in Moscow in May, 21 year old Dimitrij OVTCHAROV won his first ever Men’s Singles crown on the ITTF Pro Tour, by succeeding at the Indian Open on Sunday 20th June 2010.
Seeded no.1, he was dominant throughout the event, beating the host nation’s Sharath Kamal ACHANTA, seeded no.10, at the semi-final stage before overcoming the athletic Korean, SEO Hyun Deok, seeded no.4, in the final.
It was to be runners up spot for SEO Hyun Deok, who at the semi-final stage had beaten no.2 seed Singapore’s GAO Ning but there was better news in the Men’s Doubles event where once again GAO Ning suffered.
Partnering colleague YANG Zi and seeded no.1, the pair had to settle for second place, being beaten at the final hurdle by LEE Sang Su and SEO Hhyun Deok.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Singles event Japan’s Sayaka HIRANO, seeded no.2, was equally as impressive as her male counterpart.
She beat Korean qualifier, HWANG Ji Na in five games at the semi-final hurdle before recording a straight games final victory over top seed and defending champion, Singapore’s YU Meng Yu.
It was for Sayaka HIRANO her third career Women’s Singles ITTF Pro Tour title; in 2006 she won in Serbia and in 2009 in Germany.
Success for Japan in the Women’s Singles event, whilst in the Women’s Doubles competition it was gold for Chinese Taipei; CHENG I-Ching and HUANG Yi-Hua beat the Netherlands partnership of LI Jiao and LI Jie to secure the top prize.
It was for CHENG I-Ching and HUANG Yi-Hua their first ever ITTF Pro Tour Women’s Doubles crown.
