That's the deal with the penhold grip: amazing FH, relatively weak BH. The shakehand grip is more balanced. Nowadays kids are mostly being taught shakehand and it seems like penhold is becoming less popular. At least in my local clubs the only penholders are older players (most of them very good btw). I can't think of a single junior penholder actually. If you're an adult beginner it's really a matter of taste and temperment as you can become an extremely good player using just about any grip. As far as blade and rubber go, look at the friendship 729 range. Both rubbers and blades are inexpensive and come in a wide range. I'll leave the details to the more experience players on this forum. |
