Maurik: Playing the long pips with NO sponge maximises the 'long pips effect'. If you can learn to play with it, it can be much more effective. However it's much harder learning to play aggressive shots without sponge. If you want to use sponge, make sure it's not too thick, 1mm at the most, but thinner (say 0.6mm) is better.
BTW It's no hard to glue rubbers on yourself. If you don't have proper atble tennis glue, you can use 'rubber cement' which is basically the same stuff. Just make sure if you glue a rubber without sponge, you DON'T put glue on the rubber, only the blade, otherwise the rubber will just schrivle up. Good luck!
