Long pips are, to varying degrees, used to confuse the opponent by passing the spin through so it comes back "reversed" Spin doesnt effect it, it rolls right through. The better a long pip is for hitting, the less spin it allows to pass through and vice versa. Long pips vary along these lines. Good hitting pips include 837 and C8. Deceptive pips are like the hallmark, grass devil, and such. The sponge also determines the properties. Usually the thickest sponge is 1.0 on a lp, and it provides the most hitting power and the least reversal. Many defensive players use their pips with no sponge at all for maximum spin reversal. I think friendship 837 is a good one to learn on. 755 would be a good next step. Both are cheap and do the job as well as any more expensive variety. Deng Yaping won the women's many times with 755 on 1.0mm hard orange sponge. |
