These 38mm Nittaku 3* balls were the gold standard back then. They are still truly excellent. Very round, with good bounce. They also last a long time. I doubt that you can find white ones any longer. But these orange ones live up to expectations. They are perfect to play with the 'classics' like Sriver and Mark V, especially with wood blades.
I do prefer them to the 40+ plastic balls - beyond moving away from celluloid, what was ITTF thinking anyway? 38+ would probably have been a lot better than what we end up with.
