ETTC: Belarus defeats Germany

Belarus defeats Germany in Men's Team Final

The European Championship in Courmayeur will be forever remebered for its surprising results. Yesterday’s Italian victory in Women Team Events is one of these, as well as today’s unexpected success of Belarus against Germany. This is the first European title for the men of Belarus and the disappointment among the Germans is strong.
Germany lost the first match. Jorg Rosskopf won the first set but he had to face Eugeny Chtchetinine’s recovery. Rosskopf could win the fourth set but not the fifth one (4-11, 11-6, 11-6, 8-11, 11-5). Anyway the most expected match decided the whole competition: Vladimir Samsonov (sixth in the world ranking) could easily win against the young talented German Timo Boll (first in the world ranking) in only three sets (11-8, 11-5, 11-6), giving his team the second point.
Then it was the turn of Zoltan Fejer Konnerth who tried to save the German team winning 3-0 (11-7,11-6,13-11) against Dmitry Chumakov. So Samsonov had the opportunity to personally give Belarus the last winning point and Jorg Rosskopf could not do anything more: Samsonov won 3-1 (11-5, 11-6, 8-11, 11-5).Belarus is the European winner team.
This final match was the last of this first phase of the European Championships and the qualifications to the singles and doubles have just begun and they will go on tomorrow and on Thursday.
