Historical Victory in Moscow, Sensational Singapore

Amid dramatic scenes, Singapore won the Women’s Team title at the 2010 Liebherr World Team Championships in the Russian capital city of Moscow on Sunday 30th May 2010.

They beat defending champions and red hot favourites, China, by three matches to one, in a contest that stunned the full house over 5,000 spectators in the Olimpijsky Sports Complex.

It was the first ever gold medal for Singapore in the history of the World Championships, a competition that dates back to 1924.

Star of the show for Singapore was 23 year old Feng Tianwei, she beat both Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen, with the one other Singaporean win coming from 29 year old Wang Yue Gu; for China the one success came in the third match of the fixture, the experienced Guo Yan defeated Sun Bei Bei.

A shock defeat for China but following the Women’s Team final, the Chinese Men restored their nation’s pride.

China overcame Germany by three matches to one.

Man of the moment for China was Ma Lin, the reigning Olympic Men’s Singles champion. He defeated both Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Timo Boll, with 22 year old Zhang Jike, playing in his first ever World Championships, adding the one further Chinese success by overcoming Christian Süss.

The one victory for Germany came from Timo Boll in the very first match of the fixture; he recovered from a two games to nil deficit to beat Ma Long, the current world no.1.

Victory for China but the day belonged to Singapore; it was the day the history books of table tennis were re-written.
