"I think its a little presumptuous of you to compare yourself , and your problems with technique , with the worlds top players competing in a prestigious , and lucrative , tournament , particularly , as you admitted yourself , that you have taken a four year sabbatical from the sport. Keep on practising."

Hello Hawk Eye. I certainly did not intend to stoke your ire in any way with what you see as my "presumption". Therefore, for the record I will state most emphatically that I am nowhere near the level of an elite, professional player. I never was and never shall be. Not even close!

However, is there not a presumption on your part for attributing my problem to "technique" when you have not seen my technique? I see little relevance to the fact that the same problems occured in a prestigious, lucrative tourneyment. The fact of the matter is that these players were experiencing the same problem with the ball losing momentum when they attempted to counter-loop on the second or third loop in the rally. They were in position and are you going to fault their "technique"? Watch those tapes and you'll see that their technique was textbook in many instances.

I just watched the 2002 European Team Championship (Zagreb) and I witnessed the exact same thing (but to a much lesser extent than at the World Cup 2001)! Incidentally, I think this tape actually offers some of the best table tennis I have ever viewed. Certainly, it does give me some hope that table tennis has not been dealt a death blow by the introduction of the larger ball. That does not change my view, however, that there is something about the new ball which is giving many players fits - especially when I notice that their form is fine and they are making good contact with the ball and, still, it just seems to not reach the net.

I agree with you that I do need to continue practicing. I will need to do this for as long as I am physically able to play. To be sure, I have lost many points with a loop where it could be attributed to my technique on that particular point but I also recognize that my technique was according to the book on other points and the ball simply lost momentum just as Liqin's (and Ma Lin and Ma Wenge and Waldner and Karlson and....)technique and positioning were fine with the same result.

Now, I apologize if you inferred, or I in any way implied, that my skill level was comparable to the World's best players. That was not my intent and such would be far, far, far from the truth. However, that should not exclude me from recognizing proper form or even exercising proper form on a forehand loop. What? Do you not know of any players who have sound form on their loops, yet, are nowhere near being among the World's elite? Forget about loops - I've experienced the ball losing momentum like that when I smack it hard with an open racket from the backcourt!

Take care,
Donald
