October World Rankings
Pro Tour winners on the move
Tuesday, October 1, 2002
Lausanne, Switzerland, 1 October 2002. Winning a Pro Tour title means a lot, for the career, for the bank account – and for the World Ranking.
On the October Ranking the winner of the Japan Open in Men’s Singles, Kalinikos KREANGA (GRE), jumped into the top 10 in the World, the winner of Women’s Singles in Japan, KIM Kyung Ah (KOR), now finds herself in the top 20 while the Women’s Singles Champion in Korea TIE Yana (HKG) is well on her way into the top 10 after a long row of good results.
Werner SCHLAGER (AUT) who won the Men’s Singles in Korea did not move from the 4th place. First of all because once you are up there, it takes a lot to move further ahead, second because the week after his Korean title he stumbled already in the first round at the Japan Open.
The top 10 in the Men’s Ranking has changed during the last months. The Chinese have dominated the World scene since the Sydney Olympics, but now 6 out of the best 10 in the World are Europeans – and China “only” has 3 players at the very top.
Timo BOLL (GER) moved forward to the 3rd place to become once again the best European behind WANG Liqin and MA Lin (CHN).
Young CHUAN Chih-Yuan (TPE) moved to the 10th position after his place in the final at the Japan Open. Other big movers are French Patrick CHILA (from nr. 30 to nr. 25), KO Lai Chak (HKG) (from nr. 44 to nr. 33) and young Dane Michael MAZE (from nr. 46 to nr. 33).
KIM Taek Soo for a long time has been the best ranked Korean. After sliding from nr. 10 to nr. 16 he is not anymore. RYU Seung Min took over as nr. 15.
On the Women’s Ranking WANG Nan (CHN) is still on top followed by ZHANG Yining (CHN) and Tamara BOROS (CRO).
TIE Yana (HKG) however is the big mover going from nr. 18 to 11, and she might very soon be the 2nd Hong Kong player in the Top 10 (LIN Ling is nr. 6).
Young Chinese JIANG Huajun and Korean KIM Kyung Ah both took a big step to move into the top 20.
