System of play for the Volkswagen 48th World Table Tennis Championships, Shanghai, China.
SYSTEM OF PLAY
* Doubles qualifications shall be played on best of 5 games; all other matches shall be played on best of 7 games.
* Singles qualifications shall be played in Round-Robin groups of 3 or 4 players from which one player shall advance to the next stage.
* Doubles qualifications shall be played in knock-out system in clusters of 7-8 pairs from which one pair shall advance to the next stage
DRAW
According to a resolution proposed by the Athletes Commission approved by the Board of Directors held in Paris'2003:
"With the exception of qualification groups and the first round of the events proper there shall be no seeding by Association Nomination (3.6.3)."
This new principle means that at Individual World Championships seeding by Association Nomination shall not be applied, but players of the same Association should be separated as far as possible in preliminary rounds/groups and in the 1st round of the draw.
According to a proposal of the Technical Committee approved by the Board of Directors held in Doha'2004 (Handbook 4.1.9.4):
"There shall not be more than 128 places in the first round of a singles and mixed doubles events, nor more than 64 places in the first round of a men's and women's doubles event, unless otherwise authorized by the Executive Committee.
